With its soft ochre hue and patina acquired over time, this ancient Chinese sculpture, carved from soapstone, embodies the quiet wisdom of a meditative old man. Seated in a peaceful posture, he holds in one hand a rustic staff, a symbol of inner journey, and in the other a gourd, a messenger of ancient traditions.
His serene face, framed by a long beard and hair falling over his shoulders, exudes compassion. The deep, finely engraved folds of his coat reveal the sure hand of a craftsman attentive to the soul of the material.
Marked by time, the steatite retains traces of its previous lives: a few shocks, slight wear, but retains the charm of its age.
A soft rock composed primarily of talc, soapstone is distinguished by its smoothness and silky feel. Easy to carve, it has been used by artisans since antiquity: Egyptian scarabs, Chinese ornaments, Inuit tools… For over 7,000 years, it has combined natural beauty and durability, standing the test of time.
