This large antique incense burner, originating from China, is crafted from dark brown bronze with a deep patina. Its round, flared shape is adorned with four relief scenery, each telling a different scene: silent mountains, rivers crossed by boats, pagodas and temples watched over by majestic trees.
The whole rests on a round bronze base, finely openwork and supported by five Sculpted feet ensure balance and elegance. The circumference of the incense burner is very slightly dented, visible in the first photo.
The use of incense dates back to the earliest civilizations. In Theravada Buddhism, it is mentioned in the Pali Canon as an offering of respect, alongside flowers, food, and drink. In Zen temples, incense burners are filled with ashes accumulated over the years, a reminder of past prayers. Alternatively, fine sand or grains of rice can be placed inside to hold incense sticks or cones.
Beyond its ritual function, this incense burner is a piece of craftsmanship that embodies Chinese tradition. Used today, it purifies the space, calms the mind, and creates a meditative atmosphere.
