Antique miniature box with two compartments, carved from bone, used for storing opium. The object has two adjoining cavities and a hinged lid, designed for easy opening and closing.
The exterior is decorated with finely engraved monkeys, visible on the lid, and foliage around the rim. This stylized figurative decoration is part of an Asian decorative tradition where the monkey is a symbolic motif associated with agility, intelligence, and observation.
The natural patina, the slight traces of use and the finesse of the sculpture suggest an ancient Asian manufacture.
An object to add to a collection of Asian art, or a cabinet of curiosities.
